Janapada Collective is a living experiment in swaraj (self-rule) — a way of life rooted in Truth and love. Emerging from the legacy of Janapada Seva Trust, founded in 1960 in Melkote, Karnataka, the collective is guided by the belief that our lives are deeply interconnected with all beings in the world and beyond. To live truthfully, then, is to live lovingly — in a way that ensures well-being for all. The outcome of such a life is Peace, which, is not just the absence of conflict, but the presence of tranquillity within and harmony around us.

At Janapada, swaraj is not just an ideal but a practice. The collective’s work begins with shaping people to self-govern — to lead lives that are responsible, mindful, and in service of the common good. Eco-social enterprises and service-based activities act as the soil for this inner cultivation. Every member here is both a worker and an owner. There is complete financial transparency, where every person is aware of the collective’s financial position. Ownership is shared equally between the Janapada Seva Trust and the collective's members.

The collective is consciously kept small — never more than fifty people — to protect the spirit of participation and equality. Decisions are made through consensus, not hierarchy. Satyagraha, the insistence on truth through nonviolence, is encouraged as a way to respond to domination and injustice.

There are conscious limits placed on production and income to avoid the trap of endless consumerism. Each member receives an assured living income, and the wage ratio is capped at 1:3 to reduce income inequality. Members are also required to take 10% of their salary as produce grown or made within the collective itself, reinforcing a culture of self-sufficiency.

Profit is not the end, but a means. Surpluses are used to build social security through health funds, retirement provisions, community development, and even a fund called God’s Aid, for unknown future needs. The collective also makes time for prayer meetings, reading circles, film screenings, potlucks, theatre, exposure visits, and workshops — all meant to strengthen the inner compass of each member, helping them stay committed to the well-being of all.

In everything it does, Janapada Collective embraces human labor as its primary energy source because it is the one source of power that is truly renewable, universally owned, and gentle on the planet. It also sets a natural limit to production — a quiet reminder that true abundance lies not in more, but in enough.

ಜನಪದ ಕಲೆಕ್ಟಿವ್

ಜನಪದ ಕಲೆಕ್ಟಿವ್ ‘ಸ್ವರಾಜ್ಯ’ ಚಿಂತನೆಯ ನೆರಳಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಒಂದು ಜೀವಂತ ಪ್ರಯೋಗ. ಸ್ವರಾಜ್ಯ ಎಂಬುದು ಸತ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರೀತಿಯನ್ನು ಆಧಾರವಾಗುಳ್ಳ ಒಂದು ಜೀವನ ವಿಧಾನ. 

ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಮೇಲುಕೋಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ 1960 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆಗೊಂಡ ಜನಪದ ಸೇವಾ ಟ್ರಸ್ಟಿನ ಪರಂಪರೆಯಿಂದ ಹೊರಹೊಮ್ಮಿದ್ದು ಈ ಪ್ರಯೋಗ. 

ಈ ಕಲೆಕ್ಚಿವ್ ಅಥವಾ ಸಮುದಾಯವು ನಮ್ಮ ಬದುಕಿಗೂ ಹಾಗೂ ಉಳಿದೆಲ್ಲಾ ಜೀವ ಹಾಗೂ ನಿರ್ಜೀವ ವಸ್ತುಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಒಂದು ಅವಿನಾಭಾವ ಸಂಬಂಧವಿದೆ ಎಂಬ ಸತ್ಯದ ಅರಿವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಸತ್ಯದಿಂದ ಬದುಕುವುದೆಂದರೆ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಿಂದ ಬದುಕುವುದಾಗಿದೆ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಸರ್ವರ  ಬದುಕಿಗೂ  ಗೌರವ ಮತ್ತು ಖಾತರಿ ದೊರೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.   ಇದರಿಂದ ಹೊರಹೊಮ್ಮುವ ಬದುಕೇ ನೆಮ್ಮದಿಯ ಬದುಕು. 

ಜನಪದ ಸಮುದಾಯದಲ್ಲಿ ‘ಸ್ವರಾಜ್ಯ’ ಕೇವಲ ಆದರ್ಶವಲ್ಲ. ಬದಲಿಗೆ ಅದೊಂದು ಪರಿಪಾಲನೆಯೂ ಹೌದು.   ಅಂದರೆ ಸರ್ವರ ಹಿತವನ್ನು ಬಯಸುವಬದುಕನ್ನು ರೂಪಿಸುವುದು  ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಉದ್ದೇಶವಾಗಿದೆ.

ಸಮುದಾಯದ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬ ಸದಸ್ಯರು ಕೆಲಸಗಾರರೂ ಹೌದು, ಮಾಲಿಕರೂ ಹೌದು. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾದ ಆರ್ಥಿಕ ಪಾರದರ್ಶಕತೆ ಇದೆ. ಜನಪದ ಸೇವಾ ಟ್ರಸ್ಟ್ ಮತ್ತು ಕಲೆಕ್ಟಿವ್ ನ ಸದಸ್ಯರ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಲಿಕತ್ವ ಹಂಚಿಕೆಯಾಗಿದೆ.

ಎಲ್ಲರ ಪಾಲ್ಗೊಳ್ಳುವಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಮಾನತೆಯ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದ ಸಮುದಾಯವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಜ್ಞಾಪೂರ್ವಕವಾಗಿಯೇ ಒಂದು ರುಜು ಗಾತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದರ ಸದಸ್ಯರ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆ 50 ಮೀರದಂತೆ ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ.  ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ನಿರ್ಧಾರಗಳು ಒಮ್ಮತದಿಂದ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆಯೇ ಹೊರತು ಅಧಿಕಾರದಿಂದಲ್ಲ. ಅನ್ಯಾಯದ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಸತ್ಯಾಗ್ರಹದ ಮೂಲಕ ಅಂದರೆ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಪ್ರತಿಕ್ರಿಯಿಸಲು  ಸದಸ್ಯರನ್ನು ತಯಾರುಮಾಡಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ.

ಅಂತ್ಯವೇ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಕೊಳ್ಳುಬಾಕ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯ ಜಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಲುಕದೇ ಇರಲು ಉತ್ಪಾದನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಆದಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದಂತೆ ಒಂದು ಮಿತಿಯನ್ನು ಗೊತ್ತು ಪಡಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ.  ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬ ಸದಸ್ಯರೂ ಒಂದು ಗೊತ್ತಾದ ಜೀವನ ನಿರ್ವಹಣಾ ಆದಾಯವನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಸಮಾನತೆಯನ್ನು ತಪ್ಪಿಸುವ ಸಲುವಾಗಿ ಕನಿಷ್ಟ ಮತ್ತು ಗರಿಷ್ಟ ಆದಾಯದ ಅನುಪಾತವನ್ನು 1:3 ಎಂದು ನಿಗದಿಪಡಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಸದಸ್ಯರು ತಮ್ಮ ಆದಾಯದ ಶೇ 10 ನ್ನು ಸಮುದಾಯದಲ್ಲೇ ಉತ್ಪತ್ತಿಯಾಗುವ ವಸ್ತುಗಳ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇದರಿಂದ ಸ್ವಾವಲಂಬನೆಯ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಬಲಪಡಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ.

ಹೆಚ್ಚುವರಿ ಆದಾಯವನ್ನು ಆರೋಗ್ಯ, ನಿವೃತ್ತಿ ಭದ್ರತೆ, ಸಮುದಾಯ ಏಳ್ಗೆಯಂತಹ ಎಲ್ಲರ ಒಳಿತಿನ ಯೋಜನೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಅನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿತ ಸಣ್ಣ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಖರ್ಚುಗಳನ್ನು ಭರಿಸಲು ‘ದೇವರ ನಿಧಿ’ ಎಂಬ ಕೇವಲ ದೇವರ ಕಣ್ಗಾವಲು ಇರುವ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟವಾದ ನಿಧಿಯೊಂದನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಸಮುದಾಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ ಓದಿನ ಗುಂಪುಗಳು, ಚಲನ/ಸಾಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಚಿತ್ರ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶನ, ಸಾಮೂಹಿಕ ಭೋಜನ, ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ಪ್ರವಾಸ, ಕಾರ್ಯಾಗಾರಗಳು ನಡೆಯುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ ಸಾಮೂಹಿಕ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನಾ ಸಭೆಯೂ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಎಲ್ಲ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳೂ ಸಮುದಾಯದ ಸದಸ್ಯರು ಆಂತರ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಟ್ಟಿಗರು ಮತ್ತು ಸಮರ್ಥರನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡುವುದರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲರ ಒಳಿತಿಗೆ ಬದ್ಧರಾಗಿರಲು ನೆರವಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ.

ತನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಕೆಲಸಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ಮಾನವ ಶ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಜನಪದ ಕಲೆಕ್ಟಿವ್ ಅಗ್ರಸ್ಥಾನ ನೀಡಿದೆ. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ   ಮಾನವ ಶ್ರಮವೊಂದೇ ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ ನವೀಕರಿಸಬಹುದಾದ ಶಕ್ತಿಯ ಮೂಲವಾಗಿದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಇದು ಸರ್ವರ ಬಳಿಯೂ ಇರುವ ಸೌಮ್ಯವಾದ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಮೂಲ. ಈ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಮೂಲದ ವಿಶೇಷತೆ ಎಂದರೆ ಸಹಜವಾಗಿ ಇದು ಉತ್ಪಾದನೆಗೆ ಒಂದು ಮಿತಿಯನ್ನು ಗೊತ್ತುಪಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ವಾಸ್ತವದಲ್ಲಿ ಋಜು ಸಮೃದ್ಧಿಯು ‘ಸಾಕು‘ಎನ್ನುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೇ ಹೊರತು ‘ಬೇಕು’ ಎನ್ನುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಜನಪದ ಸಮುದಾಯವು ಅರಿತಿದೆ.
